Visiting Historic Saint Augustine? Don’t Miss THIS!
If you have ever been in historic Saint Augustine, Florida, then you will understand why it is such a popular destination. Who wouldn’t want to visit a place where you can see the oldest masonry fort in the U.S. as well as multiple beaches and other Spanish architecture? Every inch of Saint Augustine is rich in history and extremely photogenic… which makes it also a VERY popular destination for tourists.
If you want to see one of the most stunning church’s in Florida – while escaping the crowds of eager tourists – then pay a visit to Memorial Presbyterian Church. It is an easy walk from St. George Street (the city’s main road) and right next door to beautiful Flagler College, in historic Saint Augustine.
I like to describe this church to others as America’s version of a European basilica. Don’t get me wrong, Europe is hands down THE place to go for hundreds of breathtaking cathedrals and basilicas. However, this gem in historic Saint Augustine, Florida constantly takes my breath away, and I think it will do the same to you.
When I first drove by this church, I was in awe at the detail in architecture and its massive size. Be sure to wander around every single side to discover unique angles and hidden beauty.
You can even tour the inside for free on certain days, which I highly encourage. The inside of Memorial Presbyterian Church is just as magnificent as the outside. I’m not sure what I was expecting when I first entered, but the church didn’t disappoint. Looking up at the bright blue dome is a special and calming moment…
After admiring the beauty inside, head back outside to see the church doors up close. As I mentioned before, the detail is just amazing. These doors are some of my favorites in the historic Saint Augustine area, especially how they are paired with the ornate columns.
Being a wedding and senior photographer, I am always on the hunt for beautiful places to use as backdrops. Memorial Presbyterian Church is one of my favorite spots to take clients. There are just so many angles to shoot from!
If you also are in Florida and want to photograph somewhere unique, head to this church. Here’s one of my favorite photos from a past proposal session:
Next time you are in historic Saint Augustine, hopefully you are eager to venture away from the typical touristy streets to explore this gorgeous and underrated church.
