Ireland: Why You Should Visit Killary Sheep Farm
The brief time I spent at Killary Sheep Farm in Ireland was so enjoyable. In fact, this excursion ended up being one of my favorite memories of the entire trip. This charming mountain farm overlooking Killary Fjord offers breathtaking beauty and unforgettable memories. From viewing sheepdog demonstrations to bottle-feeding the cutest little lambs, this was an amazing Irish experience.
Even the drive through Killary Fjord up to the farm is stunning. I mean, how can you beat this view?
At Killary Sheep Farm, visitors can watch various demonstrations that give an up-close and personal look at sheep farming in the Irish culture. There are different options such as sheepdog demos, sheep shearing demos, bog cutting, and other fun activities. Click here for more details on the demonstrations.
I got to watch a beautiful sheepdog in-action. It was truly fascinating how the dog listened closely to the farmer and obeyed his various whistles and calls to herd the sheep. Sure enough, the sheep casually walked up the mountain and into their pin.
Afterwards, we were brought inside a barn to play with and bottle-feed lambs. The little babies were so cute! Playing with baby sheep was the perfect way to end to a memorable excursion.
We visited Killary Sheep Farm in the morning while traveling from Westport to Galway. From Westport, it was a scenic drive of around 45 minutes to 1 hour (factoring in some time for photo stops). You really only need 1-2 hours max at the farm. This gives you plenty of time for more site-seeing.
Killary Sheep Farm is conveniently located just 16 minutes away from one of Ireland’s most popular stops – Kylemore Abbey. This castle is more than likely on your itinerary…why not add in a stop at the farm?
To tour the farm and see the demonstrations, you must call ahead for an appointment. They are open seven days a week, year round (weather permitting).

How happy I am to see this sheep farm is still operating. We visited Ireland 5 years ago and this was inserted into our itinerary and what a wonderful surprise it was! And the view is most memorable for me as well. I am also sharing the photo I took while there.
